|Build a Dog Sled|
Begin by having students research dog sleds about a week before the actual building project. Students are assigned to find enough information to write at least 50 words about dog sleds, sketch a picture of one they'd like to build and list the building materials they will need.
Students may use any resources of their own or those from the library. Once the research has been completed, students finalize their building plans. Each student may build their own sled or work with a partner, provided the partner is from the same class. Partners work together to plan the type of sled and who will bring what materials.
Students are allowed two class periods of 48 minutes to build their sleds. Sled sizes may vary from life-size to two inches. Once the sleds are completed, each class votes on the categories listed on the ballot provided on the next page. Winners receive a dog sled cup of candy. In May, sleds are moved to the local Norwest Store for display during Vern Halter's visit.
