Idita-Dogs
Through positive behavior in the classroom, school, community and academic excellence, students earn popsicle sticks to use for Iditarod projects. Deciding what behavior qualifies and the number of sticks earned is up to the individual teacher.

Once students earn enough sticks to build a kennel, their Iditarod projects begin. Each student receives an Idita-dog when their kennel has been built and named. "Authorities" are notified if students do not maintain proper care of their kennels. Poor care may result in the loss of their dog.

Students continue to earn sticks and work towards building sleds. Students need three sleds for the Iditarod. Each sled needs to be a different size, shape and color. They also must be able to hook their dog to the sled. Students earn a button for the Iditarod when they have three sleds built.

Earning sticks is the key to this project. The cost of entering the Iditarod in March with their dog is 100 sticks. Additional Idita-dogs for their kennels also cost 75 sticks each.

Other Idita-dog activities:
  • Kennels can be decorated for all the holidays - Halloween, Christmas, Easter and of course, the Iditarod.
  • When winter arrives, students will also need to have:
    1. Booties for their Idita-dogs.
    2. Energy sources for their kennels (this can be done through a science unit in class.
